Vastly talented Melbourne-based producer/DJ Phoenix Manson has made a highly anticipated return sharing the third release in his ‘Natural Selections‘ YouTube series.

Shot in collaboration with It’s A Feeling Creations and edited by Tyrone Jones, the project pairs panoramic drone footage alongside an hour-long DJ mix of uplifting House music. Featuring artists such as; Gwen McCrae, Soulsearcher, Four80East, WEISS, and Disclosure, ‘Natural Selections‘ is designed to set the mood for listeners as they work/study and relax.

For the third episode of the series, Phoenix Manson takes viewers on an immersive experience through the lush ferns and sky-high Californian Redwood trees of the Great Otways National Park. You’ve never seen an outdoor setup like this before, this is how all ironing boards should be used from now on!

Prior to the release, TLF managed to link up with Phoenix Manson to chat about the new project, the process, his vision, what’s in store for the future, and more!

First off, how’s the first half of the year been for you?

Things are going well. 2022 has been a wild ride thus far, a year of many firsts. It’s crazy to think we are only just halfway through.

Congrats on the release of your latest ‘Natural Selections’ project!
What was the process like bringing it to life and what inspired your vision?

Thanks Tim! Each installment of the ‘Natural Selections’ series starts with the location. I choose an environment (Desert, Forest, Snow ect.) and research where in the country this environment exists.

From there I jump in the Jeep with my videographer/drone pilot, Tyrone Jones, to go scout the location and talk through the overall vision of the episode.

Once we have locked in the location I dive deep into my musical influences and memories to start piecing together different tracks that will form the foundation of the mix. The goal is to create a DJ set that takes viewers on a journey informed by the surrounding environment.

It’s safe to say you’ve been pushing boundaries when it comes to creating accompanying visuals for your work, what is it about nature that resonates with you the most?

One of the original aims of ‘Natural Selections’ was to create mixes to work, study and relax to, much like the Lo-Fi Hip-Hop live stream on YouTube. The goal was to create an engaging visualiser for my mixes. Originally intended to be played in the background to enhance productivity.

However, when we started to incorporate the nature elements into the pilot for episode #001 I started thinking about the sense of wonder that you feel when watching a David Attenborough documentary or the weightless feeling you get when watching immersive drone footage. Any feelings of reverence for nature that the viewer feels as they are watching the mixes is an added bonus.

What else can we look forward to seeing from Phoenix Manson in 2022?

I am currently packing my bags (and decks) for some overseas adventures starting on the 1st of August. The original plan was to wait until 2023 to tour the ‘Natural Selections’ concept but some exciting offers have started coming in and it feels like the right decision to start moving forward.
